As my lowest-priced future attainable daily driver dream car (LPFADDDC), it’ll only take a couple more years before depreciation brings the majority of them to sub $40k price tags. Then I’ll be outta college with a well paying job and the majority of student debt paid off (hopefully) and I’ll have my moment.
Soon...

boxsters are even cheaper

But I want a Cayman more.

07-ish Caymans are cheap.

But 981 is better than 987 in just about all the ways to me, even though I’ve driven neither.

Mid $ 20k s for those. The S no less.

Which is an insane deal for what you’re getting. The only thing that comes close is an E9X M3 that will need rod bearings soon.

I’ve ridden in both, and while the 987 feels a bit more nimble and tossable, the 981 has a much better interior and has a noticeable power gain. Either way, I’m in the Cayman > 911 camp all day.

Yeah I have been watching then lately .

I’m used to ‘70s- 80s Porsche interiors, I’m spoiled by any Porsche interior post-996. I’ve been T eam Cayman since the 991 started. I’ve just got that pre-2009 IMS Anxiety still lol.

That is impressive for sure.

And then you’ll have a baby on the way, and will be cross-shopping Korean crossovers. But after they graduate from high school, then it’ll be your turn (at least that’s what I keep telling myself)

This is the correct answer.

Hell no. My dad could raise a kid with an impractical death trap and keep it to this day (911), so can I! My dad cheated by having responsible dailies.

This was exactly what I did for my first sports car. I bought a 2-year-old base model Cayman which had depreciated from $56k to $36k.

Cant argue with that logic

I am a walking Mythbuster. I constantly seek social venues to dispel the myth that attaining parenthood means giving up your fun car.
I’m not saying anyone should emulate me, but before we had our child, I sold my Cayman which was my only car at the time.
And shortly after the birth, I bought my F355 . The sports car became a weekend-only car, and I inherited my wife’s old beater to commute with and baby-schlep .
Here in ‘Murica, assuming you could already swing a sports car to begin with, it’s definitely doable to keep it through parenthood IMO. People just prioritise other things, or stigmatise impractical cars, or whatever their excuse is.

Any non-limited-edition Porsche will eventually depreciate into scrap, so by the time K-Roll finishes school the 981s will be more affordable than they are today .

Stop t elling everyone my secret plan!
FYI Don’ t forget to cross shop Lotus Evoras and Jaguar F-types as they are in the same price bracket of depreciation

I support any driving enthusiast getting a Cayman. Or a 911 for that matter, but I am biased.
On that note, I test drove 718 GTS when I dropped off the 997 for service and detailing. People like to talk shit about the 718's for the engine, but I loved driving it. The engine is superb. SO much midrange . Doesn’t sound ANYTHING like a Subaru to me either. Not nearly as good as my car, but I still liked it. It also seemed roomier than the last Cayman I looked at..

40K isn’t exactly pocket change for any recent grad, but as long as you know it will be a major financial commitment and will rob you of some flexibility you may very much want at that point in your life, you can definitely do it!

I’ve never liked any Porsche I’ve driven until I drove a Cayman. Not even an S, it was the most basic equipped one with a manual, and that was enough to do it for me.
I’ve been eyeing one as a possible fun car after college, like you.

I drove a S with 42k miles and it was $28k out thr door in Detroit. Pretty sweet deal! And that flat 6 howl <3

98 to 00 boxters are between $ 7 and 8k, and they have less than 100k miles. I would have bought one instead of the Mini if I knew this earlier.

I’m just waiting, waiting for the Evoras to drop to $40k! I should be in a position to get one if that happens next year.

I’ve had literally the exact same cars.com search page open on my screen for the past week !
I’m still on the fence about switching to a 981 Boxster/Cayman. I currently track a base C6 Vette which has tons of power , but gets left for dead by all the Porsche’s in the corners. I suppose I could always upgrade to a Grand Sport, but even that won’t offer Porsche precision, and it would be fun to try something new.
Sadly, the S models of the 981 never seem to depreciate, so I’d be stuck with the 265/275hp base model, which is a huge downgrade from my current 430.

If I was in the position to do so, I would get one today.

Understandable, but I do remember reading somewhere at some point that practically all Caymans are safe and/or have been fixed.
